Has it ever crossed your mind how many litres of water or how much electricity that spa treatment might be consuming? Have you ever thought that while you spend all that time (and money) revitalising your body, how much you are taking away from the environment?
The Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI), Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo, Australasian Spa Association and Spa Australasia have introduced a Low Carbon Spa and Beauty Initiative which encourages all day spas, beauty salons, wellness and fitness centres to not only cater to your needs but to consider the effects on the environment as well.
The goal of the Initiative is to reduce the operational climate change impact from the Spa & Beauty industry by 20% by 2015. This makes the Spa & Beauty industry one of the first in the world to take joint voluntary action against climate change.
The initiative is designed to encourage businesses to investigate practical ways to reduce power, water and waste by rewarding the offset of emissions with carbon credits and earn the well-established Low Carbon (LowCO2) or Carbon Neutral (NoCO2) business certification.
So the next time you visit your spa or salon, challenge your therapist on what steps they are taking to reduce their impact...and look for the CRI logo.
